Got some writing to get done? Try WriteRoom!

Screen shot 2009-11-09 at November 9, 2009 | 9.25.30 PMWriteRoom is an amazing app that I downloaded for free from MacHeist today.  If you are looking for an application that totally eliminates all distraction and keeps you squarely focused on the task at hand, WriteRoom is your solution.

When you launch WriteRoom, your screen dissolves to a gentle, graded black. A blinking green cursor appears, waiting for your input.  WriteRoom doesn’t allow formatting of your text, such as underlining, bolding or italicizing via the standard command-I, command-B etc. keystrokes, but it will let you know if you have incorrectly spelled something.

As you type, your text scrolls up the screen.  Using the arrow keys up or down allows you to review what you’ve already typed.  MacBook users can also use the two-finger vertical scroll on the track pad to accomplish the same task.

My poor old eyes couldn’t cope with the size of WriteRoom’s default font.  By depressing the command (aka “clover” or “apple” key) key and the plus key, I could pop up the font to a size suitable for my viewing.  Of course, using the reverse is true as well — command and minus key reduces the font size.

If you slide your mouse up to the menu bar, the pull down menus for the application appear, allowing you to save your document, create a new document, control the font type, size, formatting and a host of other features.

For those of us who recall, WriteRoom returns the user to the days of old — when it was just a CRT, you and the keyboard — with no other distractions.  If you’ve got to get some writing done and want to be kept on task, give WriteRoom a whirl.

PS – MacHeist offers WriteRoom as part of its free (yes, free) offer, but you need to act fast.  MacHeist’s offer ends in 2 days.  Check it out at http://www.macheist.com/

PPS – Reading this after MacHeist’s free offer, which includes WriteRoom for FREE, is over?  Download and purchase WriteRoom for $24.95 here.
