WordPress version 4.4 “Clifford” has an embeds feature that spruces up how you embed and share content.

New Embeds Feature in WordPress 4.4

Since WordPress is now an oEmbed provider your posts are embeddable on other WordPress sites.

Simply drop a post URL into the editor and see an instant embed preview, complete with the title, excerpt, and featured image if you’ve set one.

WordPress will include your site icon and links for comments and sharing.

In addition to post embeds, WordPress 4.4 also adds support for five new oEmbed providers: Cloudup, Reddit Comments, ReverbNation, Speaker Deck, and VideoPress.

I wrote a post on Medium last autumn about a Technical Divorce between two colleagues. Pasting the URL from Medium renders this result:

Less perfect, here’s the version using the embed code generated by Embed.ly. As you can see, there’s a broken graphic as part of the code they generated:

A Technical Divorce

This evening, I finalized a technical divorce between two colleagues. I don’t know all the particulars of the fallout. I’m grateful to be unaware. As the project virtual assistant, I had the critical information of both entities, and I was the neutral intermediary.

While I really like the links to socially share when you mouse over the right of the Embed.ly code, I’m loving the ease of use that this baked in WordPress feature provides. It’s smart for any WordPress user to use elements such as oEmbed to create visual interest to your posts, as well as connecting readers with your other social platforms. Given that the Embed.ly code wasn’t perfect right out of the box, and that it’s a multi-step process to use their services, the clear choice is using oEmbed within WordPress 4.4 Clifford.
