If you are an iPad Pro user, like millions of other iOS users you recently received an iOS software update notification. Sometimes things don’t go as planned, and the device becomes stuck during an OTA update or when applying App Store updates following the upgrade, which is exactly what is happening to some iPad Pro users following the iOS 9.3.2 upgrade.
As a general practice, it’s a good idea to apply iOS software updates as quickly as possible, since they often contain important security upgrades and other critical fixes. As I reported on Twitter May 17, the latest release of iOS seems to be breaking – or worse, bricking – some iPad Pro devices. Some iPad Pro users who use the OTA (over the air) method of applying updates are having their devices lock up just at the point of reboot:
Nevertheless, there’s always that worrying moment when you know your old iOS version is about to shut itself down and the stitched-together new version is supposed to boot up in its place…
…and at least some iPad Pro users seem to have got stuck right there.
To break free requires putting your device into DFU Mode (Device Firmware Update) and make a choice – do you try again to apply iOS 9.3.2 or revert to iOS 9.3.1? Value Walk reports on how to downgrade your device to 9.3.1, and explains why you can’t downgrade to an earlier release than that.
While I didn’t experience OTA bricking during the upgrade of my iPad Pro, I did have difficulty applying app store updates following the successful upgrade of my device. Here are three tricks to try if you have trouble getting app store updates to apply on ANY iOS device:
- The two-finger salute (reboot). At the same time, press and hold both the home and power buttons and keep them depressed until you see the white screen with an Apple logo in the center of it. Let your device completely reboot, then ensure you are on wifi or a network and try your app store updates again.
- The App Store refresh. Tap any icon on the tab bar (that’s the bar that has the icons labeled “Favorites,” “Top Charts,” “Explore,” “Search,” and “Updates”) ten times. You’ll see a brief flash of your screen following the successful 10 taps, indicating that the App Store has been refreshed.
- Only apply one update at a time. My iPad Pro got stuck in applying any of the 13 updates that were available to me. After performing the two-finger reboot method, I made sure I was on wifi and then clicked on one app to update, rather than clicking “Update All.” Sometimes one wonky app in the update list can spoil the update process for all the others, so go slowly.
These tricks are worth trying first. If all else fails, however, you will likely need to seek the support of the Apple Store.
