Remember the days of beaming your vCard to other Palm or Treo users? Nameo is a .99 iPhone application that allows you to essentially do the same thing.
A green choice
Nameo currently only works with other iPhone users, but is a great, green choice for sharing contact information with colleagues who use an iPhone or iPhone 3G.
Once you download and install Nameo from the iPhone app store, you may launch Nameo and click on the settings icon.
When you press the connect icon with another iPhone user, you’re able to exchange virtual business cards.
Limitations:
Right now, you are only able to enter your first and last name, phone and email address. Hopefully future versions will allow you to enter your mailing address, fax, mobile and other pertinent business contact info.
Both phones must be iPhones and must have the Nameo application installed.
Both phones must have Bluetooth turned on.
Update: I own the “antique” original iPhone; my husband owns the 3G iPhone. Nameo has hung and locked up several times on my device but has not done so on my husband’s phone. Along with that, you’re sure to lock up the other party if you’ve begun a connection, you’ve gotten their data and you close the app before the other party gets their data downloaded.
Coming soon (according to the Nameo site):
Development of this application for other mobile operating system platforms.
Beaming is green!
When I was a Treo user, I really valued the “beam” feature. Nameo shows promise to be an application that allows a paper-free exchange of your contact information with others.
I hope that its developers continue to create additional functionality for the app, and that its use and popularity spreads among iPhone users and other mobile platform users.
